Khettabi, Oussama Ramzi (2026) Social media and digital transformation in shaping Algerian students' international study choices: qualitative interview dataset.
This dataset consists of qualitative interview data collected as part of a Master of Research (MRes) project at Bournemouth University entitled "The Role of Social Media and Digital Transformation in Shaping Algerian Students’ International Study Choices".
The dataset includes ten semi-structured interviews conducted with Algerian students who were either studying abroad or preparing to study abroad. Nine interviews were transcribed and one interview was documented through detailed notes at the participant’s request.
The research analysed how social media platforms influence destination awareness, information verification, online community engagement, expectations, and study-abroad decision-making. All personal identifiers have been removed and participants have been assigned pseudonyms (P1–P10) in accordance with ethical and data protection requirements.

| Data collection method: | The dataset was generated using a qualitative research design based on semi-structured interviews. The study adopted an interpretivist approach and analysed how social media and digital transformation influence Algerian students’ international study choices. The study population consisted of Algerian students who were either studying abroad or preparing to study abroad. Participants were selected using purposive sampling to ensure that all participants had direct experience of using social media and digital information sources when considering international study opportunities. Data were collected through ten semi-structured interviews. Nine interviews were transcribed, while one interview was documented through detailed notes at the participant's request. Interviews were conducted online and face-to-face and explored participants’ use of social media, information-seeking behaviour, destination preferences, trust in online information, online communities, and study-abroad decision making experiences. |
| Statement on legal, ethical and access issues: | This dataset consists of qualitative interview data collected from Algerian students who were either studying abroad or preparing to study abroad. The primary ethical consideration concerned the protection of participant confidentiality and the risk of disclosing participant identities. To address this, all personal identifiers, including names, email addresses and other identifying information, were removed from the data. Participants were assigned pseudonyms (P1–P10) and all transcripts were anonymised prior to deposit. Participants were informed about the study and provided consent for participation and for anonymised data to be archived in an appropriate research data repository. One participant requested that the interview was not audio-recorded or transcribed; detailed notes were therefore used instead and anonymised in the same manner as the interview transcripts. The dataset has been prepared in accordance with Bournemouth University ethical approval procedures and data protection requirements. |
| Additional information: | This dataset supports the MRes thesis entitled "The Role of Social Media and Digital Transformation in Shaping Algerian Students’ International Study Choices" submitted to Bournemouth University in October 2026. |

| Data processing and preparation activities: | Interview transcripts were reviewed, cleaned and anonymised prior to deposit. Personal identifiers, including names and email addresses, were removed and participants were assigned pseudonyms (P1–P10). One interview was documented using detailed notes instead of a transcript at the participant’s request. The dataset was checked to ensure participant confidentiality and compliance with data protection requirements. |
