This dataset contains survey data collected for the study “TikTok Usage in the UK and USA: Investigating the Role of Demographic Factors, Personality Traits, and User Motivation.” The research examined how demographic characteristics, personality traits, and motivations for use predict patterns of TikTok engagement among adults in the United Kingdom and the United States. Data were collected using an online survey distributed via the participant recruitment platforms Prolific and Sona Systems. The final sample consisted of 361 adult participants aged 18–68 years. Participants self-reported their TikTok usage over the previous week, including hours spent on TikTok and number of times the app was opened. Usage was recorded across three time periods: day-time (6:00–22:00), night-time (22:00–6:00), and total weekly usage. In addition to usage metrics, the dataset includes measures of demographic variables (age, gender, nationality), personality traits, and user motivations. Personality was measured using the Big Five Inventory-10 (BFI-10), which assesses extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. Motivations for TikTok use were measured using the Motives for TikTok Use scale, capturing dimensions such as socially rewarding self-presentation, trendiness, escapist addiction, and novelty.

<collection_method>Data were collected using an online survey administered through Qualtrics. Participants were recruited using two online recruitment platforms: Sona Systems, which advertises research participation opportunities to undergraduate psychology students at Bournemouth University, and Prolific, an online platform used to recruit participants from the general public. Participants were required to meet the following inclusion criteria: they had to be 18 years or older, fluent in English, reside in either the United Kingdom or the United States, and be an active TikTok user, defined as having accessed TikTok at least once within the previous 30 days. Participants were informed about the study through the recruitment platforms and accessed the survey via a link directing them to Qualtrics. After opening the survey link, participants were first presented with a participant information sheet outlining the purpose of the research, what participation involved, and how their data would be used and stored. Participants then provided informed consent electronically before proceeding to the questionnaire. Those who did not consent were exited from the survey.</collection_method>
<legal_ethical>Ethical approval for the study was granted by the Bournemouth University Research Ethics Committee prior to data collection. Participants were provided with a participant information sheet explaining the purpose of the research, the voluntary nature of participation, how their data would be used, and how confidentiality would be maintained. Participants provided informed consent electronically before completing the survey.Participants were recruited via Sona Systems and Prolific, and compensation was provided in accordance with the policies of these platforms. Participation was voluntary, and participants were free to withdraw at any time prior to submitting their responses. The dataset does not contain sensitive personal data or information that could reasonably be used to identify individual participants. As a result, the anonymised dataset can be shared for research and educational purposes without compromising participant confidentiality.</legal_ethical>
