Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions: Interviewees were encouraged to provide answers in their own terms or in a manner that reflects their own perceptions rather than those of the researcher. An initial list of questions was put forth first: (For the Greeks: “Who first talked to you about the 1914 events?”; “Have you been back to visit Phocaea/Foça in Turkey?” // For the Turks: “What is your family history?”; “Do you know stories from the days of the coexistence of Greeks and Turks in Foça?”; “ Have you heard of the 1914 events? How did you find out about them?”) then additional topics that came up during the conversation were further explored.
