This dataset supports the PhD thesis entitled Chinese Animated Documentary: Classification, Culture and Discourses of Soft Power. It contains research sample information, including the geographic distribution of directors, and sentiment-analysis data derived from film dialogue. The sentiment data include polarity results and Plutchik emotion classifications for four representational categories: Inward Self-Representation, Inward Other-Representation, Outward Self-Representation, and Diasporic Self-Representation. The dataset is provided in spreadsheet format and supports the classification, discourse analysis, and discussion presented in the thesis.

Data collection method:	Animated documentaries were selected through purposive sampling. The selection criteria included films made by Chinese or Chinese-diasporic directors, films addressing China, Chinese identity, Chinese history or society, and films that were publicly accessible for research. Production information, director location and circulation information were collected from publicly available sources. Film dialogue was transcribed and cleaned, and Chinese-language dialogue was translated into English for computational analysis. Sentiment polarity was analysed using VADER, while eight emotion categories based on Plutchik’s model were identified using a pretrained DistilBERT-Plutchik model. The results were organised according to four representational categories and exported as spreadsheet files. Manual checks were conducted to verify the accuracy and contextual relevance of the results.

Data processing and preparation activities:	Relevant works were identified through searches of streaming platforms, broadcaster archives, and academic and industry sources, and were cross-checked for accuracy regarding release date and production origin. Each entry was manually reviewed and categorised according to the study's classification framework. No automated data cleaning tools were used at this stage.
